When it comes to Tollywood, the drama never seems to end, just like in its movies. The industry which has just managed to limp back to normalcy after the stuntsmen went on a 35-day long strike in December, is caught in yet another crossfire. And this time it’s the Film Employees Federation which is calling the shots. It’s been 10 days since movie shootings have come to a complete standstill, costing the industry an estimated loss of 80 crore.
That’s not all. A couple of outdoor shootings had to be cancelled after the location fees were paid, the date sheets of actors are in a disarray and most importantly, the interest rate on the movie finances are escalating, leaving the producers devastated. Shooting of big-budget flicks starring the likes of Balakrishna, Nagarjuna and Venkatesh, have come to a halt.
The current strike is taking a toll on the biggest of producers. Daggubati Suresh Babu says, “We have lost two months of work, resulting in a revenue loss of 20 per cent. Employees were demanding a 60 per cent hike, while we were ready for a 32 per cent hike. Finally, we even offered them 60 per cent, but they have not accepted. We pay much more than the government’s labour act norms, but yet they are not satisfied.”
But the unions, who are in no mood to get mollycoddled, tell a whole new story. “The strike will continue till the seven unions are satisfied. Since the next revision will take place only after three years, what is being offered is negligible. Given the current high inflation, the pay hike they are
offering is not acceptable,”
insists K Rajeshwar
Reddy, general secretary of AP Film Industry Employees Federation.
Going by the way this strike is unfolding, things may get worse, predict exhibitors. “Movies like “Theen Maar”, “Mr Perfect,” “100 % Love” among others, were slated to release during Sankranti. Due to strike, they have been delayed. There is hardly a week’s gap between releases, significantly decreasing revenue for producers,” says Vijendar Reddy, president of the Telangana Film Chamber of Commerce, who adds, “I know a producer who took a loan of 15 crore and has been paying interest in lakhs.”
Producers have to battle not just the monetary issues, but also their stars’ problems. Actor/producer Lakshmi Manchu says, “The dates I got from actors for the film I am producing have all gone haywire. I have to figure out a way to fix that, apart from having to deal with the interest rates on the finance loans. The work on my film sets have also stalled. It is especially painful to bear this when I know a Tamil film unit is happily shooting in Hyderabad, but we can’t.”
The desperate producers can’t even hire outsiders to complete the shooting, because they are obliged to hire only registered film employees. And enrolling someone into the film crew is not an option either, thanks to the astron o m i c a l union membership fee of around 5 lakh. “We can’t even hire outsiders as all our dancers and t e ch n i c i a n s have to be hired from these fixed unions. Moreover, new prospects from outside can’t afford to join these unions. This strike is foolish and it is killing the industry. It is a massive financial set back for us. The other film industries are moving on, but we stay stagnant because of such strikes and rules,” adds producer Suresh Babu
NTR Jr is set to have traditional wedding
After the much-hyped wedding of Tollywood's stylish star Allu Arjun, it's now NTR Jr's turn to showcase his style.
However, going by reports, the actor is going for a very traditional pattu pancha with a kaddi border and pattu lalchi sans the turban that Bunny was seen sporting on his big day. Reliable sources tell us that the wedding will take place at his ancestral village Nimmakuru. Also for the various pre-wedding celebrations, our source tells us that the Tollywood star is keeping it very simple. While the groom is going low key, we hear that the bride is going traditional at its opulent best. According to sources, the bride-to-be Lakshmi Pranathi is still to zero in on her wedding saree. "She has gone to Kancheepuram to pick up three sarees. She might probably wear a full-gold saree which costs a whopping `50 lakh. The other two sarees are in the range of `30 lakh each," says the source.Yet another source close to the family tells us that the bride had purchased the jewellery first and her trousseau was designed to suit them. Apart from sarees for the Gauri Puja and other pre-wedding ceremonies, Lakshmi's pradhanam saree is said to be a visual splendour in yellow with a chutney green border adorned with swans and elephants. That perhaps just gives a hint of the grandeur that's to be expected. But the cards that are already out, speakvolumes. NTR Jr's card, which is said to cost ` 3,000 each, resembles a family album. After the celebrations are over, the couple will be leaving for Bali for their honeymoon.Friday, April 22, 2011
Not doing Krrish 2 Rana Daggubati
Controversy’s self-confessed poster-boy, Rana Daggubati has cleared the air about the gossip surrounding him with a slew of denials — the latest being his entry to the sequel to Hrithik Roshan’s superhero hit Krrish.
“Name Krrish and what comes in mind is Hrithik Roshan. I was never approached for it,” says the 26-year-old, who was in the city recently to promote his debut Bollywood movie Dum Maaro Dum (DMD). There has been link-up stories of Rana and his DMD co-star Bipasha Basu. “I’ve been a poster boy for controversies since my first Telugu film, Leader. I never knew Bipasha before the film. The link-ups are all baseless. She is a dear friend and that's what she will always be,” he clarifies. But what about his reported split with actor Shriya Saran after reports about his proximity to the Bong beauty circulated? "I was not seeing anybody in the first place, and I am single," he says with a giggle.Talking about his maiden Hindi venture, Rana says he initially thought his role in DMD was just a one-scene act.“I thought it was a cameo. By the time I read the script, I realised my character is the same as the other two protagonists (Abhishek Bachchan and Prateik Babbar),” says the actor, who plays a Goan musician in the thriller. Based in Hyderabad, Rana’s accent is heavy with southern influence. He said he underwent a series of diction classes and guitar lessons for his role. So, what next after DMD? “There has been a lot of interest and I’ll definitely sign a Bollywood film this year,” says Rana, who wouldn't shift to Mumbai because of its traffic.
